As a concerned citizen, I have been involved in digital activism. I have petitioned and made people aware of the lack of equality the LGBTI community has. I have shared countless petitions and information to make my friends and family aware of some of the injustices of this world. I feel that the people around us need to be aware of what is happening away from what is offered on prime time news because the world is much bigger than what is presented in an hour segment.
There are a few digital activist sites that help to spread awareness for the inequalities of minority groups, animal rights, human rights, and saving the planet. These sites or organisations are Get Up, Change.Org, All Out, PETA, Oscars Law and Marriage equality Australia.
Marriage equality
Australia is set up on
Facebook they organise peaceful
demonstrations and rallies to
allow the LGBTI community a voice. I have signed many
of their petitions, attended
a few of their rallies and shared many
of their posts.
Oscars
Law started on
Facebook as an organisation to make people
aware of the horrendous treatment and care of puppies
in the puppy farming industry and do
all in their power to spread awareness. Oscars Law have done numerous
protests at puppy farms; have set up informative stalls at public events and
have raised funds to help stop
puppy farmers and to care for seized
animals that are malnourished and
mistreated and they have organised all of this through the use
of social media.
Facebook has 728 million daily active users around the world (Investor Relations
2013). Twitter has 500 million people using the micro-blogging site (Holt 2013). If every, person who
uses, social media sites are to engage in digital activism I think that causes would be fought and resolved
quickly and beneficially. So, next time
one of your friends or family members shares
a cause on their Facebook or
twitter site, have a think
about what it is they are sharing and
how it can benefit
a minority group, animals/ animal conservation
and how it
can help the environment. I know that I want to leave
a happier and environmentally
friendlier place for the next generations
to come and I know that this
is something that we can all achieve together.
